In DoR, however, it's the first game where my interest in playing the maps is more tactical, where I enjoy the trial rooms as much as the campaign maps. Even if it wasn't the best strategy, I feel compelled to roleplay or play to one's strengths and just enjoy the experience.

Historically in Advance Wars my strategic interest in the game was surpassed by my interest in the character of each CO and how they play. Basically, it has everything to do with how I approach gameplay in it. Now, the second reason I like Days of Ruin is one that wasn't apparent to me immediately. This way we can get Brenner's sacrifice, Will standing up for himself and Lyn getting revenge and still laugh at gags in the tent. That's one feature I hope returns every single time, because it leaves room to flesh out everyone they care to with gags without being shoehorned into the story assuming it's taking a more serious turn. Still, my saviour on this front are the advice sections. It had the chance of being too grimdark for me, but some occasional levity from Dr Morris really helps. So the first thing you actually notice is the tone of the story. What's interesting, though, is that I like it for different reasons than DS or AW2.

As it turns out, I really really like it. I expected to not like Days of Ruin prior to actually playing it.
